He is associate professor of Geomatics, where he leads the Laboratory of Geomatics. He has mostly focused on statistics and aerial surveying, by means of photogrammetric and lidar sensors. Current research topics are: geographic information as a support for urban analytics and smart cities, spatial enablement and geostatistics for health and environmental data, photogrammetry from UAV platforms.
In previous years, he chaired a working unit in four national PRIN projects, funded by the Ministry. He has been PI within the EU PULSE project, in which he (i) planned an innovative WebGIS tool for performing spatio-temporal navigation of complex environmental and health datasets; (ii) worked on the topic of high-frequency, high-density monitoring of air pollution and on the related possibility of performing personal exposure. He is involved and WP leader of the recently approved (yet to start) EU PERISCOPE project, which is focused on socio-economic effects of the COVID-19 virus.

Impact case studies/Key research (in ottica VQR):

Within the EU H2020 PULSE project, a network of 40+ low-cost air quality monitors has been deployed on the city of Pavia. Such a network is capable of performing air quality assessment with high spatial density and high temporal resolution.

Dense and frequent monitoring allowed us to implement air pollution personal exposure assessment, i.e. the capability of measuring the exposure of individuals. Paths followed by individuals are tracked by means of a dedicated mobile phone app (but a standard hiking app is sufficient to carry out the task).

By invoking a RESTFul service, the app can jointly evaluate air quality models and the tracked paths, so that the exact amount of the pollution ingested can be estimated, for a selected time frame: one day, one hours, the time of a walk. All the citizens of a city can therefore regularly assess the amount of pollution they are exposed to.
